HEALTH BEFORE BEAUTY (HBB)

— Because health should never be a gamble

Health Before Beauty (HBB) is not just a slogan — it’s a principle and a system built on documented health, genetic security, and transparency. Where traditional pedigree systems end, HBB begins.

For years, pedigrees have been marketed as a “guarantee” of pure breeding. In reality, a pedigree is nothing more than a family tree — a list of parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. It says nothing about health, hidden carriers, genetic mutations or disease risks.

What a pedigree actually tells you — and what it doesn’t

A pedigree:

  • only shows the parental lineage

  • does not prove genetic status

  • does not reveal carriers of diseases or defects

  • often contains high inbreeding coefficients (COI)

  • is frequently used to justify linebreeding — which increases health risks

Many kennel clubs “approve” dogs for breeding without requiring any real health or genetic testing. Usually, all that’s needed is age, a pedigree, and maybe an exhibition result. No DNA test. No in-depth health screening. No COI calculation. No control for cryptic carriers.

In practice, this means that kennel club breeding approvals are often nothing more than Russian roulette.

Example: Cryptic genes and hidden risks

Imagine you have a dog with a “beautiful pedigree” and championship titles. On paper, everything looks perfect. But the dog carries a cryptic genetic mutation — a gene that is not visible but can be inherited and cause serious problems in the next generation.

If this dog is bred to another carrier (and you don’t know, because no testing was done), the outcome might be:

  • 25% chance of puppies with a serious disease or defect

  • 50% chance of puppies becoming new carriers (invisible risk)

  • 25% chance of healthy puppies

No pedigree in the world will show you this. But a simple DNA test can.

Under HBB, this kind of pairing is never allowed:

  • Every dog is DNA tested before breeding.

  • Cryptic carriers are identified.

  • Risky combinations are blocked before mating ever happens.

Example: Linebreeding and COI

In many breeds, it’s common to find the same dog appearing multiple times in a pedigree. This is called linebreeding. It’s often used in show breeding to “fix” certain looks. But what also gets fixed are genetic weaknesses.

A COI (inbreeding coefficient) above 6–8% already brings a measurable increase in genetic disease risk. Many “purebred” pedigrees have COI values of 15% or more — some over 30%.

HBB monitors and calculates COI before any combination is approved. If it’s too high, the breeding is not allowed. Period.

Kennel club approvals — a false sense of security

Many buyers and breeders believe that a dog “approved for breeding” by a kennel club is guaranteed to be healthy. In reality, such approvals are often based on:

  • Age and identification (chip and pedigree)

  • Appearance judged at shows

  • Possibly a basic patella check or simple health note

They do not require:

  • DNA testing

  • COI calculation

  • Genetic carrier screening

  • Real risk analysis

The result: two “approved” dogs can produce sick puppies without breaking a single kennel club rule.

How HBB does it differently

HEALTH – Documented, not assumed

  • Every dog is health screened and DNA tested for relevant conditions.

  • Health certificates and lab reports are available.

  • Cryptic carriers are identified and monitored.

GENETIC DIVERSITY – No dangerous linebreeding

  • Inbreeding and linebreeding that increase risk are not allowed.

  • COI is calculated and controlled.

  • Only genetically safe combinations are approved.

TRANSPARENCY – Nothing hidden

  • Full documentation is accessible to buyers.

  • Each record is manually verified.

  • No hidden carriers. No closed databases.

Critical questions every buyer should ask a breeder

If the breeder only has a pedigree:

  • Are both parents fully DNA tested?

  • Can you document the COI for the litter?

  • Have cryptic carriers been identified?

  • Are all health documents open and verifiable?

  • How do you avoid passing on hidden genetic problems?

If the breeder follows HBB:

  • All of these questions have clear, documented answers.

  • You receive DNA profiles, COI data, health certificates, and risk analysis before buying.

  • You know what you’re buying.

  • You drastically reduce the risk of inheritable disease.

In short

A pedigree is just a family tree — not a guarantee of health.
HBB is a documented health system built to protect dogs, owners, and bloodlines from hidden genetic risks.

While kennel clubs rely on appearances and superficial checks, HBB relies on facts, science, and verifiable data.

Choosing a pedigree alone is gambling.
Choosing HBB means choosing safety, health, and ethical breeding.
